COTP-COI Wildfire Fuels Management and Risk Reduction Update

The Modoc National Forest continued to complete and advance important wildfire fuels management and risk reduction projects in 2019 that protect the California-Oregon Transmission Project (COTP) and other California-Oregon Intertie (COI) lines from catastrophic wildfires (https://www.tanc.us/wildfire-preparation-and-response/). Completed projects included three mastication contracts totalling 616 acres and 53 acres of hand thinning and piling of fuels piles for prescribed burning under safe weather conditions. Projects advanced for 2020 and 2021 implementation include additional vegetative fuels mastication and timber sale contracts near the COTP and COI lines totalling over 1,400 acres of wildfire hazard risk reduction activities. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest awarded a contract for 143 acres of maintenance mastication on existing fuel breaks near the COTP right of way.
